About the Radishes…
About the Radishes… I had such trouble germinating carrots after the rains of March dried up, that I thought I would try seeding them in a deep pot. I bought a wooden tub with wheels, and direct-seeded it using the same technique as planting lettuce in a pot, (see my Late Bloomer episode!) except I sprinkled in radish seed as well. I thought the quick-germinating radishes would shelter the long-to-germinate carrots and I was right. I kept the soil moist and covered with a towel and out of the sun till I got sprouts. Things started off well, but, the radishes came in way too thick.
This is a carrot sprout hiding in the radish sprouts.
So yesterday, with the utmost delicacy, I thinned the radishes down to one per inch. (Update: clipping them with fine scissors would have been less disruptive to the carrot sprouts) This is how many radish sprouts I gently pulled out. My neighbor says you can’t replant these, but I did it once before and got a few good radishes.
This motley crew is from the first go-around. Would it be easier and less expensive to buy a bunch of perfect, organic radishes in the famers market? Well, yes, but, learning to grow food is it’s own reward. And if you get to eat the food, that’s icing on the cake!
And, I would have missed out on a very meditative hour last evening. Thinning is very meditative! This is after I replanted them in ground in the tiny radish and beet bed.
Are you growing radishes? Have any advice about the radishes…? See the update to this post here. And watch a much more successful planting of carrots in the wooden barrel here. Thanks! – Kaye

I am the only one in a house full of 6 people to eat radishes so I didn’t grow them this year. I’m thinking of being a bit selfish and growing some any way! I don’t think it’s to late for my zone. Maybe in a small deep pot on the patio? I love them sliced very thin on a spinach salad…yum!
Yes, perfect on both counts. Do it!!
Most of what we go to all this trouble for is inner peace, right?
If you decide not to replant the culled radish sprouts, throw them on a salad or curry. They are delicious.
I should have done that, gardenengineer, as this batch did not perk up after a couple of days. I’ll only get a handful of radishes from the thinned ones.
